Mom bought pineapples for the girlfriend she's never met

It's been a week since she got a marriage proposal. Her boyfriend keeps pestering her about coming to meet her family, but her dad has passed away and her mom has been sick — she keeps putting it off. Their home is small, just a living room and one bedroom, and she's embarrassed to show it.

Her mom, oblivious to all this stress, just lies in bed all day. The daughter comes home irritable, and that frustration always ends up cutting into her mom with a sharp 'what have you even done for me?' She breaks down crying at the fridge, thinking two big pineapples sitting inside seem kind of absurd given everything.

Then she hears her mom's voice from the room: 'I went to visit your friend who's getting married. I waited and waited to go with you but you were so busy, so I went alone — even though I'm sick. I bought pineapples because I heard she was coming over. She's such a lovely, pretty girl.' The daughter grabs the fridge door and cries for the rest of the day. 'Everyone in the world is kinder than me.'
