Incompetent intern's mom showed up to the office and the CEO fired him on the spot

I've worked corporate for over 10 years and thought I'd seen every type of person possible. Then this happened and it broke my brain.

I'm a team lead at a small IT dev shop. Our team's solid—everyone's talented and reliable. No drama for ages until THREE MONTHS AGO when we hired this one new guy. During the interview he seemed sharp. Knew all the trendy tech stacks, gave off huge energy. I was hyped.

Then he actually started working and. Yeah. No.

Basic architecture understanding? Missing. Responsibility for his own code? ZERO. Every time we found a bug and asked him to fix it he'd go "oh it's the library" or "the environment's configured wrong" or some other excuse. Fine, I figured, he's new. I started sitting with him one-on-one, walking him through everything.

Then Friday happened.

Our team had been grinding for MONTHS on this project. Deployment was literally the next day. We're doing final checks and suddenly—critical memory leak in HIS module. I pull him aside, keep it professional. "Hey, this logic looks off. Can you fix it today? Deployment's tomorrow so we need to move." Super reasonable request.

His FACE. Just froze. And then he goes "I have 30 minutes till I leave. That's workplace harassment."

I'm sorry WHAT.

This is his mistake. The ENTIRE PROJECT is affected. And he's worried about clocking out on time? I explained it again. This isn't personal work. This is a team commitment. If you don't finish this, everyone else is staying up all night cleaning up your mess.

He didn't even listen. 6pm hits, he packs up and LEAVES.

So me and two senior devs had to stay until like 4am rewriting his entire garbage code.

Monday morning I call him in for a meeting. I tell him Friday was irresponsible, he hurt the team, and this is going in his performance review. Professional but serious.

He starts CRYING and bolts out of the room.

An hour later we hear shouting in the hallway. The door flies open and some middle-aged woman walks in holding his hand like he's five years old. His MOM. His actual mother.

She walks straight to my desk and SLAMS it. "Are you the team lead who's destroying my precious son?" Just SCREAMING. "He was crying all weekend, didn't eat, what did you do to him??" The whole office stopped working to watch.

I tried to calm her down. She didn't stop. Started yelling about how I'm making him work late and destroying his character and demanding I apologize and erase the bad review. The intern was standing behind her looking SMUG AS HELL like his mom just saved him.

I actually laughed. The audacity.

Then our CEO walks out.

This guy is cold, sharp, doesn't mess around. He takes one look at the situation and quietly tells them to follow him to his office.

Later I find out what happened and dude. DUDE. The CEO was RUTHLESS.

He threw down the intern's shit code logs, his attendance records, AND a document calculating the financial damage from him walking out early and fucking up the whole team. Then he tells the mom, super calm: "This isn't school. This is a profit-generating company. Your son caused massive damage. He refused a direct work order and put his team in a bad position. That's breach of contract."

Then he says: "Effective immediately, your son is fired. We're reviewing damages for overtime the team had to cover and lost opportunity costs from the project delay. You'll be hearing from legal."

The mom went WHITE. Couldn't say anything. The intern finally realized how fucked he was and started BAWLING, begging for forgiveness.

CEO had security literally escort them out of the building.

Mom was still screaming "How can a company be like this?!" as they pushed her out. But everyone already saw everything.

The intern didn't even get his stuff. Couple days later he had someone pick it up via courier service.

Now the rumor mill says he's going around telling people he quit because his "boss was abusive." But the industry's small. His name + "came to work with mommy" is LEGEND at this point.

After this I realized something: you can teach people skills. You CANNOT fix someone with zero accountability who hides behind their parents. And man, our CEO protecting the team like that? Respect went crazy high.

We ended up shipping the project on schedule. Team's back to normal.

Anyone else got unhinged people like this in their office? I used to think just tolerating people was the move but nope. Not anymore. That "if you keep being nice to them they think it's a right" thing? Spot on.
