Seismologist alone in salt flat hears something that shouldn't exist

Β·πŸ‘ 0β™‘ 0πŸ’¬ 0

Buckle up.

Javier was a seismologist. Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni salt flat was basically his perfect stethoscope to listen to the earth's heartbeat. Tens of thousands of square kilometers of just. Salt. His tiny observation station ran on solar panels in the absolute middle of nowhere, completely cut off from the rest of the world. His job was tracking micro-seismic activity in the Andes. He loved it out there. Just him and pure data.

Then his seismograph picked up something weird.

It wasn't an earthquake. Earthquakes are chaotic explosions. This was mechanical. Perfectly regular. Like...humming. Over and over. Hmmmmm. Hmmmmm. Like some massive underground city vibrating at a constant frequency. The signal was SO faint that without his equipment, nobody would've noticed it at all. He figured it was solar wind interference or some distant mining operation. Logged it as "noise, unknown origin" and moved on.

Except it didn't stop.

Every single night at midnight, that humming sound came back. Exactly 10 minutes. Then gone. And day by day, the amplitude was getting slightly bigger. Noticeably bigger.

Then the rainy season started.

The salt flat flooded. Turned into this massive mirror. And that night, every star in the sky was reflected under his feet. Perfect symmetry. Top and bottom didn't exist anymore. Javier was just standing there, absolutely mesmerized by how unreal it all looked.

And then his seismograph went off again.

Hmmmm. Hmmmmm.

But this time it wasn't just coming from the equipment.

It was coming from underneath him. From the shallow water. From the giant mirror beneath his feet. The sound was literally rising up through the ground.

He panicked. Ran back to the station. Started digging through old logbooks from previous researchers. Found one from a German geologist who'd gone missing here like 10 years ago. Mostly dry data entries, but the last few pages... the handwriting got progressively unhinged.

"They sing. The salt sings. This isn't seismic activity. This is... conversation. They want the reflection. They want the shadow..."

"When there are two skies, they come up. The mirror is a door. My reflection is... looking at me. Smiling at me..."

He put the journal down and looked up.

The observation station's only window showed the pitch black night sky. And directly below it, the same night sky reflected back.

He saw his own reflection in the glass. Pale face. Terrified. He was about to breathe a sigh of relief when he froze.

His reflection... was smiling at him.

Very slowly.

He SCREAMED. Backed away from the window. The seismograph wasn't humming anymore. It was outputting this horrifying sound like hundreds of voices whispering all at once. He tried to shut everything down but the machines wouldn't listen to him.

All the lights in the station went out at once.

Complete darkness.

And then the entire salt flat outside started glowing on its own. Not starlight. The water under his feet was pulsing with this cold, phosphorescent light. Matching that same rhythm. Hmmmmm. Hmmmmm.

He was standing on the world's biggest speaker and biggest screen at the same time.

He walked outside like he was in a trance.

The glowing salt flat was beautiful and absolutely horrifying. He looked down at his reflection in the water.

But it wasn't a scared Javier looking back anymore.

It was something else. Empty eyes. Mouth stretched in this grotesque grin.

It slowly lifted its arms. And started knocking on the water's surface from underneath. Like it was trying to break through glass.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

He could feel the vibrations in his feet. This wasn't a hallucination.

Tap. Tap.

Then hundreds. Thousands. Of skeletal arms rose up from the darkness under the water all around him. All knocking at once on the surface.

His reflection smiled at him one last time. Really wide.

Then its hand broke through the surface. Grabbed his ankle.

A few weeks later, a rescue helicopter found the abandoned observation station. All the equipment was still running perfectly. But there was no sign of Javier anywhere. Not a single footprint in the entire salt flat. That part freaked the rescue team out the most.

One of them was checking the bathroom mirror to report back to headquarters.

That's when he noticed something.

His reflection's mouth was moving at a different time than his own.

Just for a second. But he saw it.

Enjoyed this? Tap the heart.
