The Shadowless Man of Lisbon

Β·πŸ‘ 0β™‘ 0πŸ’¬ 0

So this is a creepy story I need to get out. Junseo was a photographer in Lisbon, and honestly the city was perfect for him. The golden light hitting the Tejo River, the yellow trams climbing the hills, the soft shadows in the Alfama alleys. He was doing this project called 'City Solitude' where he'd capture people looking alone even in crowds. Every day he'd take thousands of photos, then spend his nights in the hotel going through them.

He found the man in a photo from Santa Justa Plaza. Just some guy in a gray coat in a crowded shot, nothing special. But Junseo zoomed in and felt his spine go cold. Everyone else in the bright afternoon sun had long shadows stretching out. But this man? Nothing. His feet were just sitting on bright ground like someone had photoshopped him in.

He figured it was a camera glitch or weird light refraction or whatever. Didn't think about it. Then the next day he found the man AGAIN. In a market photo this time. And around him, people were subtly avoiding him, leaving space like there was some invisible force field. No shadow either.

After that, Junseo started obsessively going through his photos. Finding him everywhere. In reflections on tram windows where everyone else showed up but he didn't. In shop windows on rainy days. The man was always angled so you couldn't see his face clearly, or only his back. Like he was hiding on purpose.

Junseo couldn't shoot anymore. He was LOSING IT hunting for the shadowless man. He finally found him walking through Comercio Square and started shooting rapid fire. Ten shots a second. Back at the hotel with shaking hands, he checked the photos. First one had the man. Then 0.1 seconds later in the next shot... he was just gone. Not out of frame. Deleted. Erased in real time.

Then things got weird. A waitress at his regular cafe talked straight through him to the empty chair next to him. The hotel front desk said his week-long reservation didn't exist. When he saw himself in shop windows, he looked thinner. Transparent.

He realized it. Watching the shadowless man, recognizing him, chasing himβ€”that was the curse. The 'not existing' was spreading to him. The virus was awareness itself.

He had to find the man. To end this or understand it. Days later at sunset by the Tejo, there he was. Gray coat, facing the river. Junseo walked closer, couldn't hear his own footsteps. He felt half-erased already.

"Who... who are you?"

The man turned slowly. Like a creaking doll.

And Junseo saw the worst thing of his life.

No face. Just smooth skin where his eyes, nose, mouth, everything should be. A blank canvas. When that nothing-face turned toward him, Junseo felt like he was dissolving. He screamed and dropped his camera.

He looked at his hands. His fingertips were transparent now. He could see the gravel through them.

Weeks later.

A Korean couple got home from Lisbon and started going through photos. The wife pointed at one. Comercio Square, busy and normal. Except there's this weird blank space in the middle. Like the image corrupted. But everyone around it was naturally avoiding that spot.

"Camera sensor probably broke. Just delete it," the husband said, reaching for the button.

"Wait," his wife grabbed his hand. "Look at the reflection in that shop window."

He zoomed in. In the reflected image on the glass, in that exact spot where nothing appeared in the photo... there was a young Asian guy. He looked terrified. Like he'd just dropped his camera.

And at his feet.

No shadow.
